Dissipation Introduction Through Circular DiscLIU Heng-xu, DUAN Wen-yang, CHEN Xiao-bo(Shipbuilding Engineering College, Harbin Engineering University, 150001 Harbin, China)Abstract: For some special cases such as cylindrical structure with moon-pool or a group of cylin-drical structures, wave loadings associated with wave elevation obtained by model tests can not bewell explained by diffraction theory because diffraction theory was limited by ignoring the viscouseffect. In order to consider the viscous effect, there are two different ways to introduce the dissipa-tion in the potential flow. One is based on the introduction of a parametric term in the boundary con-dition on the free-surface which plays a role of extract energy through the free-surface. Second is tointroduce a pressure drop through any surface in the fluid and a transparent horizontal surface cir-cular disc of zero thickness dissipation was presented in this paper. Then considering the moon-poolwith restricted entrances and introducing this circular disc dissipation in the restricted entrance, theexcellent agreement of the free-surface elevation with measurements in model tests is obtained bothfor the peak period and for the amplitude at resonance by choosing an appropriated dissipation co-efficient and also shows that the dissipation through a circular disc is reliable to provide realisticpredictions.Key words: Eigen-function; potential flow; viscous effect; dissipation; moon-poolCLC number: O357 U661.1 Document code: A doi: 10.3969/j.issn.1007-7294.2014.06.0011 IntroductionThe problem of the hydrodynamic interaction between waves and cylindrical structures isalways regarded as an academic case due to its wide and important applications in variousengineering projects. Recently, cylinder with moon-pool or a group of cylinders have been stud-ied through model tests and numerical analysis due to the large wave elevation occurs at someperiods and large wave kinematics induces large wave loadings on cylinders.The diffraction theory was started with MacCamy and Fuch [1] on the simplest case of avertical cylinder standing on the seabed. Linton and Evans who is considering a group of cylin-ders gave the simples expressions for wave loadings and free-surface elevations. For the caseof cylinder with moon-pool, Mavrakos [2] have solved wave loads on a stationary floating bot-tomless cylinder with a finite wall thickness.
