Synthesis and spectral studies of macrocyclic Pb(II), Zn(II), Cd(II)and La(III) complexes derived from 1,4-bis(3-aminopropoxy)butanewith metal nitrate and salicylaldehyde derivativesSalih Ilhana,*, Hamdi Temelb, Salih PasabaDepartment ofChemistry, Faculty ofArt and Sciences, Siirt University, Siirt, TurkeybDepartment ofChemistry, Faculty ofEducation, Dicle University, Diyarbakir, TurkeyReceived 16 September 2008AbstractEight new macrocyclic complexes were synthesized by template reaction of1,4-bis(3-aminopropoxy)butane with metal nitrateand 1,3-bis(2-formylphenyl)propane or 1,4-bis(2-formylphenyl)butane and their structures were proposed on the basis ofelementalanalysis, FTIR, UV–vis, molar conductivity measurements,1H NMR and mass spectra. The metals to ligand molar ratios of thecomplexes were found to be 1:1. The complexes are 1:2 electrolytes for Pb(II), Zn(II) and Cd(II) complexes and 1:3 electrolytes forLa(III) as shown by theirmolarconductivities (Lm) in DMSO at 10À3mol LÀ1. Due to the existence offree ions in these complexes, such complexes are electrically conductive. The configurations of La(III) and Pb(II) were proposed to probably octahedral andZn(II) and Cd(II) complexes were proposed to probably tetrahedral.# 2008 Salih Ilhan. Schiff base metal complexes have widely been studied because of their industrial, antifungal, and biological applications [2]. Schiff base macrocycles have been of great importance in macrocyclicchemistry [3]. Currently, a great deal of attention is being focused on macrocyclic ligands because they play animportant role in many aspects of chemistry, medicine and the chemical industry [4,5]. Macrocyclic ligands withadditional donor atoms appended to ring have generated considerable interest because of their capacity to bind andtransport metal ions, for the potential to prepare and study their mixed-valance forms, and as models formetalloproteins [6]. The stability of macrocyclic metal complex depends upon a number of factors, including thenumber and type ofdonor atoms present in the ligand and their relative positions within the macrocyclic skeleton, aswell as the numberand size ofthe chelate rings formed on complexation. Fortransition metal ions, features such as thenature and magnitude of crystal-field effects play also an important role [7]. There is a continued interest insynthesizing macrocyclic complexes because of their potential applications in fundamental and applied sciences andwww.elsevier.com/locate/ccletAvailable online at www.sciencedirect.comChinese Chemical Letters 20 (2009) 339–343* Corresponding author.E-mail addresses: salihsiirt@gmail.com, salihilhan@dicle.edu.tr (S.
