The severe cold that grips Moldova every year coupled with the poverty plaguing institutions and families alike, mean children and families are living without the basics to ward off the cold. They live in buildings incapable of protecting them from the freezing temperatures which can go down to –20 degrees C as they do not have the resources to buy the fuel needed when the Government turns off the electricity. With lack of heating staff need to massage the children’s hands and feet. Patrolling takes place many times a night in an attempt to prevent frostbite, and other cold related injuries. Many of the children suffer painful chilblains that can take many months to heal. How can you help? By providing - Warm clothing and blankets. Woollen blankets (1.6 metres by 1.4 metres) are needed. This can be achieved by making 20cm squares, which can be knitted, sewn or tightly crocheted. - Alternatively, blankets can be made using polo fleece or quilting. - Some people are happy to knit, or make clothes – all clothing must be unused please due to Customs regulations. - Others would like to contribute in by buying clothing; summer or winter as well as underclothing and nightwear. - Baby clothes are also in great need as the families are unable to provide for their Newborn’s needs. - Yarn of any ply or new material that could be made into garments would be gratefully received - Hygiene products for the kitchen and home, ie toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, disinfectant, washing powder bandaids and bandages - Mission Without Borders are also committed to sending sums of money to the Mission Without Borders Staff in Moldova to buy the urgently needed hygiene items. - To raise funds I am making 300ml containers of homemade jam. - I have in stock passionfruit, plum, and different forms of marmalade. - If you would like to help in any way please contact Sheryl Rumball on 0432952762 or sherylrumball.com I will be sending a container to the orphanages in May and November.
