Designation: E1320 − 20 (Reapproved 2026)Standard Reference Radiographs forTitanium Castings 1This standard is issued under the f i xed designation E1320; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval. This standard has been approved for use by agencies of the U.S. Department of Defense.1. Scope1.1 The reference radiographs provided in the adjunct to thisstandard are reproductions of original radiographs and aresupplied as a means for establishing some of the categories andseverity levels of discontinuities in titanium castings that maybe revealed by radiographic examination. Use of this standardfor the specif i cation or grading of castings requires procure-ment of the adjunct reference radiographs which illustrate thediscontinuity types and severity levels. They should be used inaccordance with contractual specif i cations.N OTE 1—The original radiographs produced for Volume I were takenwith X rays in the range of 110 kVp to 220 kVp. The original radiographsproduced for Volume II were taken with X rays in the range of 200 kVpto 340 kVp.1.2 These f i lm reference radiographs are not intended toillustrate the types and degrees of discontinuities found intitanium castings when performing digital radiography. Ifperforming digital radiography of titanium castings, refer toDigital Reference Images E2669.1.3 These reference radiographs consist of two volumes.Volume I, described in Table 1, is applicable to a wall thicknessof up to 1 in. (0 mm to 25.4 mm). Volume II, described in Table2, is applicable to a wall thickness of over 1 in. to 2 in. (25.4mm to 50.8 mm). The standard may be used, where there is noother applicable standard, for other thicknesses for whichagreement has been reached between purchaser and manufac-turer.N OTE 2—The reference radiographs are not impacted by this revision. There have been no revisions to the adjunct reference radiographs sinceoriginal issue. The adjunct reference radiographs of any issue remain validand may be used to this standard.1.4 The plates produced to serve for use in this standardwere purposely cast to exhibit the desired discontinuity. Theplates were cast using different processes as shown in Table 1and Table 2. Hot isostatic pressing was not used on any of theplates.1.5 From time to time, there may be minor changes to theprocess for manufacturing of the reference radiograph adjunctmaterials. These changes could include changes in the f i lms orprocessing chemicals used, changes in the dies or printing forthe cardboard mats, etc.; however, in all cases, these changesare reviewed by the Illustration Monitoring Subcommittee andall reference radiographs are reviewed against a f i xed prototypeimage to ensure that there are no changes to the acceptancelevel represented by the reference radiographs. Therefore, theadjunct reference radiographs remain valid for use with thisstandard regardless of the date of production or the revisionlevel of the text standard.1.6 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to beregarded as standard. The values given in parentheses aremathematical conversions to SI units that are provided forinformation only and are not considered standard.1.7 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety, health, and environmental practices and deter-mine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.1.8 This international standard was developed in accor-dance with internationally recognized principles on standard-ization established in the Decision on Principles for theDevelopment of International Standards, Guides and Recom-mendations issued by the World Trade Organization TechnicalBarriers to Trade (TBT) Committee.2.
