Abdel Rahman, Cairo M.A. Matyn, Gent Summary A field experiment was conducted on peas, grown in a sandy soil located in the Western Desert of Egypt, to find out the best management under a limited supply of irrigation water. The experiment was designed in such a way that the main, sub-main and sub-sub-main plots were subjected to the following treatments: ir- rigation treatments (66.2 and 77.8% of the IRn), conditioners (control, 10 m3/ha stable manure, 10 m3/ha stable manure + 56 kg/ha P205 + 200 kg/ha agricul- tural sulphur, 10 m3/ha stable manure + 75 g/m 2 bituminous emulsion, and 75 g/m 2 bituminous emulsion) and seeding rates (60, 70 and 80 kg/ha), respectively. Concerning the yield, water use effi- ciency and root distribution, the best results were achieved using 66.2% of the IRn throughout the growing season, 75 g bitumen/m 2 and a seeding density of 70 kg/ha. 1 Introduction Our food demands are tremendous and continuously increasing. To meet those demands, Egyptian agriculture is forced to expand in sandy soils under severe ISSN 0933-3630 @1990 by CATENA VERLAG, D-3302 Cremlingen-Destedt, W. Germany 0933-3630/90/5011851/US$ 2.00 + 0.25 constraints ...i.e. limited irrigation wa- ter resources, inadequate soil water re- tention and low soil fertility. The key to a successful sandy soil reclamation program, depends upon our ability to correctly integrate soil and water man- agement practices with the local environ- mental conditions. TAYEL et al. (1988) mentioned that mulching sandy soil with bituminous emulsion up to 75 g/m 2 had no signif- icant effect on seed index, water use ef- ficiency and yield of broad bean. Ac- cording to WAHBA et al. (1989), the treatment mentioned above, had no sig- nificant effect on height, stem diameter, and disk diameter of sunflower plant. On the other hand, MATYN et al. (1989), stated that bitumen mulch had a positive effect on individual garlic plant weight. TAYEL et al. (1989) and TAYEL & MATYN (1990) found that bitumen mulch at the rate of 75 g/m2 had a pos- itive effect on groundnut growth. They added that this effect varied with irriga- tion level, the mulched area, and heaping process. In general, water use efficiency is mainly affected by irrigation level.
