A recent study on the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Gamesshowed that there is an increase in national pride following the hosting of the event.The aim of this study is to examine whether this f i nding is replicated following thehosting of the 2012 London Olympics. The study is a two-stage survey involvingstudents from a university in the United Kingdom. The f i rst survey was administeredsix months prior to the Olympics to establish the level of national pride of studentsin the university. The same survey instrument was administered again six monthsafter the Olympics. Statistical tests showed that there is no signif i cant differencein national pride from the two surveys. This suggests that the relationship betweenhosting a major sporting event and national pride is more complex than what hasbeen suggested in earlier studies.59.1 IntroductionSport is an important and conspicuous vehicle of national expression. Many nationsusesportstocreatenarrativesofsharedmeaningandvaluesforthecitizensofanation.In addition, international sports competitions encourage nationalistic displays andprovide the platform for a nation to demonstrate its sovereignty and strength. Assuch, sports can enhance the national identity and pride of a nation [1–3].Some nations have gone further in using sports to build its national identity andpride by hosting major sporting events. This has been documented extensively in theliterature but most recently in the South African FIFA World Cup 2010 [4, 5].
