PereraAccepted: 1 June 2007 / Published online: 11 September 2007# Springer Science + Business Media B.V. 2007Abstract A five-year Coordinated Research Project(CRP) entitled ‘Integrated approach for improvingsmall scale market oriented dairy systems’ is currentlybeing implemented by the Food and AgricultureOrganization and the International Atomic EnergyAgency, through their Joint Programme on ‘NuclearTechniques in Food and Agriculture’. The objectivesare to (a) identify and prioritize the constraints andopportunities in the selected dairy farms; (b) determinethe most important limiting factors; (c) developintervention strategies; (c) assess the economic impactof the interventions; (d) develop methodologies forrecording and demonstrating the economic impact; and(e) promote the adoption and dissemination of provenstrategies and methodologies. Fifteen institutes indeveloping as well as developed countries are partici-pating in the project, through ten research contracts(Bangladesh, Cameroon, Pakistan, Paraguay, Peru,South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tunisia andVenezuela), one technical contract (Peru) and fourresearch agreements (Malaysia, UK, USA and Uru-guay).The initial phase ofthe project,whichfocused onthe conduct of Participatory Rural Appraisals andEconomic Opportunity Surveys in the countries of theresearchcontractholders,hasnowbeencompleted.Thispaper describes the background to the CRP approachand the procedures used for developing, initiating andimplementing this project.Keywords Dairy .
