Although preparation starts withan adequate prevention strategy this gives noguaranty of staying free of contagious diseasessuch as CSF. If a contagious animal disease isintroduced in a free country, decision makershave to face many uncertainties regarding thecourse of the epidemic, the expected eff i cacyand eff i ciency of eradication strategies and thepossibility of sanitary measures set by othercountries. Despite these uncertainties they haveto decide on an eradication strategy or a changein eradication strategy (Jalvingh et al. 1999). Furthermore, managing the enforcement of theeradication strategy can become very compli-cated, especially with large epidemics, due totime pressure and many different interrelatedprocedures that have to be executed at the sametime.Therefore, an eradication operation of a conta-gious animal disease should be prepared in ad-In 1997-1998, the Netherlands experienced a large epidemic of classical swine fever(CSF). The magnitude of this epidemic stressed the role information systems could playin supporting the management during an eradication campaign. The enforcement of aneradication strategy can become very complicated, especially with large epidemics, dueto time pressure and many different procedures that have to be executed at the sametime. The application of comprehensive information systems may result in more controlover the process and in a relief of the operational management. After a brief description of the Dutch epidemic the authors provide an overview and thegeneral application of four different types of information systems, classif i ed as decisionsupport systems. The application of these information systems in animal disease controlis illustrated by providing concepts for a system architecture for transaction processing,management and executive information support and decision support. The applicationof a data warehouse as part of this systems architecture is explained. The eradication of CSF from the Netherlands was complicated by several factors. It isimportant to notice that information systems cannot prevent these factors. However, in-formation systems can support disease control authorities in controlling these factors.Classical swine fever, decision support systems, disease control, the Netherlands.
