An early emphasis on safety enables thereduction of opportunities for error and misuse in healthcaretechnology, and the corresponding safety and well-being ofpatients and providers. A pre-condition for preventive designis a deep understanding of users’ characteristics, goals, needs,and contexts of use. Standards recommend a user-centereddesign process coupled with ethnographic methods (e.g.,self-report, observation) to gain this knowledge. However,current human factors methods may not provide an efficientmeans to explore the problem space during the concept stage.On-site observations require identification of an appropriateobservation site, stakeholder buy-in, and IRB approval withadherence to HIPAA regulations. Off-site simulations requiretask scope, which limits design exploration before it has beeninitiated. Recommended self-report methods (e.g., interviews,focus groups) also have limitations. In previous work wefoundthatthe elicitationofexperiencesthrough Bstorytelling^resulted in the identification of significantly more context ofuse information than semi-structured interviews. The overallgoal of this work is to present storytelling as a method rootedin narrative inquiry that aids designers’ understanding of us-ability requirements. We present a conceptual model for therole of storytelling in design informed by a synthesis of nar-rative and design research and apply the model to healthcaretechnology.WepresenttheDesign+Storytellingframeworkasa means for healthcare designers to operationalize storytellingin their work.Keywords Narrativeinquiry . The increased use of technology withinhealthcare, and the corresponding need for usable technologiesthat support patient care, demands a focus on usability duringdesign. Although the importance of medical device usabilityhas been well established since the formation of the HumanEngineering Committee within the Association for theAdvancement of Medical Instrumentation (AAMI) [2], a re-view of devices reveals that Ba disturbing proportion of newdevicesstillhavesignificantshortcomings^intheuserinterface[3].
