Designation: D4725 − 15Standard Terminology forEngine Coolants and Related Fluids 1This standard is issued under the f i xed designation D4725; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This document covers terminology relating to enginecoolants. It is intended to provide a reference for anyoneseeking information on engine coolants, and also to provide auniform set of def i nitions for use in preparing ASTMspecif i cations, test methods and other standard documents.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.2. Terminologyantifoam, n—a substance added to engine coolant concentrate, corrosion inhibitor packages, or supplemental coolant addi-tives to prevent or suppress foam.D ISCUSSION —Eliminating foam improves heat transfer.antifreeze, n—a term frequently used in the marketplace forengine coolant concentrate. (See engine coolant concen-trate.)antirust, n—an inhibitor package, solid or liquid, intended tobe diluted with water or glycol for use in an engine coolingsystem to mitigate rust and corrosion.ash content, n—the residue from an engine coolantconcentrate, antirust, or engine coolant that remains afterevaporation, charring, and ignition at strong heat.boiling point, n—the temperature at which the vapor pressureof an engine coolant reaches atmospheric pressure underequilibrium boiling conditions.cavitation corrosion, n—a form of localized, acceleratedcorrosion characterized by deep pitting and caused by highmechanical forces resulting from coolant vapor bubblecollapse at the surface of the metal.cavitation erosion corrosion, n—the mechanical removal ofprotective f i lms on metal by the formation and collapse ofvapor bubbles in a liquid, and the abrasive action of a liquid, which may contain suspended solids, moving at high veloc-ity.D ISCUSSION —The mechanical removal of the protective f i lms exposesfresh metal to corrosive attack.coolant additive package, n—the combination of inhibitorsadded to an engine coolant to mitigate cooling systemdegradation, corrosion, scaling, and foaming, or to provideother desirable properties.corrosion inhibitor package, n—the combination of inhibitorsadded to an engine coolant to mitigate cooling systemcorrosion.corrosive water, n—a standard solution containing 100 ppmeach of sulfate, chloride, and bicarbonate ions introduced asthe sodium salts to distilled water.1 This terminology is under the jurisdiction ofASTM Committee D15 on EngineCoolants and Related Fluids and is the direct responsibility of SubcommitteeD15.92 on Terminology.Current edition approved May 1, 2015.
