    KENTUCKY The earliest explorers into the area now comprising the Commonwealth of Kentucky found a land of beauty, and a land of death. Untouched forests, rushing clear streams, wide but navigable rivers, and an unbelievable abundance of game made the area one of great promise for settlement. Flocks of wild turkeys darkened the skies, while deer, buffalo, and smaller wild animals were easily to be had. However, Indians used the area as their battleground and did not take kindly to the invasion ofthe white people. About 1750, Dr. Thomas Walker discovered the Cumberland Gap, the Shawnee River (which he called the Cumberland River), the Big Sandy River, and the Kentucky River (which he called the Louisa). Dr. Walker was of Louisa Co., Virginia, and later of "Castle Hill" Albemarle Co., Virginia, He was born in King & Queen Co., Virginia on Jan. 25, 1715 and died on Nov. 9, 1794. He had moved to Louisa County before 1745, where he was appointed a Justice ofthe county, and served as a member ofthe House of Burgesses in 1757-58, and from Albemarle County during at least 1765 and 1769. In 1778, he was a member ofthe commission appointed to run the Virginia and North Carolina boundary line to the west, He was well acquainted with the Indians and was often named to deal with them. Tradition states that Dr. Walker and party were the first white men to penetrate into the interior of what is now Kentucky. One source states that he was accompanied by Ambrose Powell, William Tomlinson, Colby Chew, Henry Lawless and John Hughes. The expedition cleared land near where Barbourville (Knox County) is now located, and built the first log cabin ever erected by white men in the area, supposedly on April 25, 1750, but it was soon deserted due to the fear ofthe many Indian hunting parties. On Oct. 3, 1750, Christopher Gist, as agent for the Ohio Company departed for the area now comprising the State of Ohio, and after scouting lands north ofthe Ohio River, descended the Ohio River to within 15 miles ofthe present site of Louisville, Kentucky. Finding the area thickly inhabited by large bodies of Indians, Gist turned back to the mouth ofthe Kentucky River, and wound his way back to the Kanawha River by mid 1751.
