Edited by W Tempest Academic Press, 1985 To quote from the preface 'This book aims to give a current picture of the effects of noise upon man, the incidence of noise in various environments and situations and the protection afforded by the law and by what is technically feasible in the way of noise control' These are ambitious aims within a book of 400 pages and, as is almost inevitable in a work which has 14 authors, they are achieved with varying degrees of success The book is in four sections which deal with noise measurement, the effects of noise on people, sources of noise In the environment and possible remedial action which can be adopted when dealing with problems of noise The first section is brief and outlines the techniques of noise measurement and evaluation procedures Part II deals with the physiological and psychological effects of noise and has separate chapters on noise induced hearing loss, speech communication and noise and efficiency Part III deals with noise in industry, including aspects of hearing conservation There are also chapters on noise from and in various forms of transportation and also in the home In Part IV there is a section on noise control but the emphasis here is on legal aspects of noise both in the United Kingdom and in the USA There is also a chapter on directives on noise from the EEC The book is probably most successful in those areas where the authors have aimed at the more general reader For example the chapter on 'Noise 315 Apphed Acousttcs (19) (1986) ( Elsevier Apphed Soence Pubhshers Ltd, England, 1986 Printed m Great Britain
