Zhang Wentang ( 1964) advanced a theorythat the upper boundary of the Lower Cambrian should be limited in the position where theRedlichia disappeared. He suggested that this standard be used not only in China but in theAsian- Australian Pacific Realm ( East fauna).So far, there are mainly two different opinions about the division of the Lower- MiddleCambrian boundary in South China. The first is that the boundary is placed at between thekunmingasps- Chittidilla Ass. Z. of the lower part of the Doupossu formation and Redlichia( P. ) murakamii - Hoff etella Ass. Z. of the Longwangmiao formation ( or Redichia < R. >guizhouensis- R. < R. >nobilis Acme Z. ) ( Yangtze region) or Kunmingaspis- NangaopsAss . Z. of the lower part of the Kaili formtion and protoryctocephalus Acme Z. of the upperpart of the Wuxun formation ( transitional region) . The second is that the boundary is placedat between the Kaotaia- Sinoptychoparia Ass. Z. of the upper part of the Doupossu forma-tion and Kunmingaspis- Chttidilla Ass. Z. of the lower part of Doupossu formation ( Yangtzeregion) ( Lu Yanhao et al. 1982) or Bathynotus- Nangaops Ass. Z. of the lower part of thekaili formation and Oryctocephalus- Xingrenaspis Ass. Z. of the middle- upper part of theKaili formation ( transitional region) ( Zhao Yuanlong et al. , 1993) ( Chart 1) .We are in favour of the second opinion and give the complernent for this opinion basedon the Balang section of Taijiang which is supposed to be a better boundary between theLower and the Middle Cambrian.In studying the Kaili Lagersta tte, we surveyed the Balang section of the Kaili formation.Taijiang, and found a great difference between the 9th and 10th layers of this section both inlothologic characters and fossil assemble. This is a better boundary below which a Bathynotus- Nangaops Ass. Z. is widely extended in the transitional regionin South China ( Zhao Yuan-long et al. , 1993). The Bathynotus- Nangaos Ass. Z. in Balang of Taijiang contains Antag-mus, Eoptychoparia, Bathynotus, Redlichia, Nangaops. ,Chittidilla, Mufushania, Probowmani-a, of which Bathynotus,Eoptychoparia, Antagmus are widely distributed in the world, and allof them are important fossils of the top part of the Lower Cambrian.
