BOOK REVIEWM.T. Arts and B.C. Wainman: Lipids in Freshwater Ecosystems, Springer. ISBN0-387-98505-0, 319 pp.This book is devoted to provide a comprehensive reader-friendly description ofthe role of lipids in freshwater ecosystems. The book summarizes a lot of workwhich can only be found separately in the scientif i c literature.First, there is one chapter devoted to the analysis of lipids in aquatic samples. Then, there are several chapters concerned with the role of lipids in the diet ofzooplankton, f i sh and, in general, the food web of aquatic ecosystems. Particularattention is devoted to fatty acids as trophic and chemical markers. The differencesbetween lipid composition in freshwater and marine organisms (and, in general, food web) are also considered. Other chapters are concerned on the interactionbetween irradiance and lipid production in natural algal populations, the inf l uenceof lipids on the bioaccumulation and trophic transfer of organic contaminants inaquatic organisms and lipids in water-surface microlayers and foams. The specif i c role of the main lipid classes, namely lecithin, cephalin, triacylgly-cerols, wax esters and free fatty acids, are specif i cally considered in some chapters. The book is co-authored by scientists from organizations in Canada and U.S.A.,e.g. Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Canadian Institute of Fisheries Technology,Universities of Lehigh, Maryland, McMaster, Newfoundland, Ohio State, Texas(Austin) and Waterloo. There are also two european authors from the Max PlanckInstitut für Limnologie (Plön, Germany) and the Trondheim Biological Station(Norway).Overall the book is useful for the immediate update of the state-of-the-art ofmost aspects concerned with the role of lipids in freshwater aquatic systems, in-cluding functionality and their role as health indicators of f i sh populations.Department of Environmental Chemistry J OAN O.
