Scope1.1 This method covers the determination of bromine (Br)and chlorine (Cl) in uranium hexaf l uoride (UF 6 ) and uranylnitrate solution by X-ray f l uorescence (XRF) spectroscopy. Themethod as written covers the determination of bromine in UF 6over the mass fraction range of 0.2 µg⁄g to 8 µg⁄g, relative touranium. The chlorine in UF 6 can be determined over the massfraction range of 4 µg⁄g to 160 µg⁄g, relative to uranium.Higher concentrations may be covered by appropriate dilu-tions. The detection limit for Br is 0.2 µg/g relative to uraniumand for Cl is 4 µg/g relative to uranium.1.2 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as thestandard. No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.3 This standard may involve hazardous materials, opera-tions and equipment. Summary of Test Method4.1 A sample of hydrolyzed UF 6 (uranyl f l uoride) or uranylnitrate solution is treated with sodium nitrite to reduce oxidizedforms of bromine and chlorine (bromates and chlorates) to theirrespective halide ions.Addition of silver nitrate precipitates thesilver halides. Spike recoveries can be improved by theaddition of potassium iodide causing coprecipitation of thehalides. The halides are collected on f i lter paper and areanalyzed by X-ray f l uorescence using two different crystal/detector systems.5. Signif i cance and Use5.1 The method is designed to determine whether or not thetested materials meet the specif i cations as given in Specif i ca-tions C787 and C788.6. Interferences6.1 Plastic equipment must be used throughout the methodfor uranyl f l uoride as the hydrof l uoric acid in the uranylf l uoride leaches chloride from glassware causing a high bias.6.2 Low recoveries may occur as the precipitate can bedifficult to transfer quantitatively to the f i lter paper. A surfac-tant can be added (optional step) to minimize the adhesion ofthe precipitate to the walls of the beakers and the funnel.7.
