ARTICLEAn analytical framework for corpus-basedtranslation studiesGuofeng Wang1 ?& Yihang Xin 2Corpus-based translation studies (CBTS) have undergone signif i cant evolution, transitioningfrom descriptive methodologies to theoretical and applied approaches in recent years.However, the analysis of corpus-based research outcomes is crucial, and the absence of aunif i ed framework often leads to less experienced researchers overlooking critical factors.This, in turn, results in varied interpretations of the same data, substantially compromisingthe objectivity and scientif i c rigor of the approach. Inspired by House’s (2014) model oftranslation quality assessment, Berman (2009)’s view on translation criticism, and De Sutterand Lefer (2020)’s multi-methodological, multifactorial, and interdisciplinary approach toCBTS, this study proposes a tripartite empirical-analytical framework to help researchersidentify the potential factors inf l uencing translator decision-making: textual characteristics,translator’s personal attributes, and the sociocultural context of the target language. Toevaluate its utility, utilizing the mixed-effects logistic regression method, a case study isconducted to examine signif i cant factors conditioning the reporting verb say and its Chinesetranslations in an English-Chinese parallel corpus of news texts, employing Appraisal Theoryas the basis to determine equivalences and non-equivalences between the source languageand target language. The case study shows that the framework facilitates a comprehensiveanalysis of the corpus f i ndings by encompassing diverse perspectives within this scaffold. Asdigital technology, studies in multimodal discourse, and CBTS continue to intersect, theframework can also incorporate non-linguistic elements and AI translation tools, providedthere are explicit criteria for examining translation phenomena. This framework equipsresearchers with a comprehensive set of perspectives, enabling them to consider as manyfactors as possible, thus bolstering the objectivity and scientif i c rigor of CBTS. The combineduse of the structured framework and the multivariate analysis technique offers a holisticapproach and stands as a critical advancement in CBTS by standardizing the analysis processand mitigate the subjective variability inherent in explaining translation phenomena.https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-024-04250-4 OPEN1 Shanghai Normal University, Shanghai, China. 2 Lancaster University, Lancaster, UK. ? email: echoking@yeah.netHUMANITIES AND SOCIAL SCIENCES COMMUNICATIONS| ????????(2024)?11:1709?|https://doi.org/10.1057/s41599-024-04250-4 11234567890():,;
