Catchment contact, however, deteriorates the quality of water and makes it unfit for potable purposes. To improve the quality of harvested rainwater, silver was used as antimicrobial agent in this study. Rainwater samples were taken from underground storage tank of a rooftop rainwater harvesting system installed in one of the buildings at the campus of Seoul National University, Seoul, South Korea. The target microorganism was E. coli, an indicator of fecal contamination, which was measured by using standard MPN method. The efficiency of silver disinfection was evaluated at concentrations, ranging from 0.01 to 0.1mg/L; the maximum approved limit by World Health Organization. The experiments were performed for 168 hours with different time intervals and various parameters including disinfection rate, residual effect of silver and re-growth of E. coli were observed. At lower concentrations, the disinfection rate was very slow and the complete removal of E. coli was observed after 14 hours. Re-growth was noted after certain period of time. On the other hand, at higher concentration of silver (≥ 0.08mg/l), the complete removal of E. coli was observed in about 8 hours without any re-growth. Lower concentrations of silver only halt the replication process of DNA in E. coli for some time without permanent damage. The removal of these organisms with the application of silver at 0.08mg/L and higher is a step ahead towards the use of harvested rainwater for potable purposes.
