    First 60‐Day Public Review Draft    November 2015  Transitional Kindergarten 1  2 The first years of formal schooling are critical ones for young children. In 3 transitional kindergarten through grade one, children must be provided the opportunity 4 to acquire the skills, knowledge, and dispositions that establish the foundation for a 5 lifetime of learning. Furthermore, they develop new understandings about how the world 6 works by observing and describing phenomena and they begin to build autonomy in 7 their own learning. 8 The Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 (Senate Bill 1381, Chapter 705, 9 Statutes of 2010) changed the entry-age requirements for kindergarten in California’s 10 public schools. It also required local educational agencies to develop and offer 11 transitional kindergarten classes in addition to kindergarten classes starting in the 2012- 12 2013 school year. Transitional kindergarten (TK) is defined in California Education Code 13 Section 48000(d) as, “the first year of a two-year kindergarten program that uses a 14 modified kindergarten curriculum that is age and developmentally appropriate.” This 15 section provides guidance to local educational agencies on how to develop TK 16 curriculum that aligns with the expectations of the CA NGSS for Kindergarten. 17  18 This section includes a discussion of the suggested learning progressions that 19 allow bridging from the California Preschool Learning Foundations for science (CDE, 20 2012a) to the CA NGSS for kindergarten.
