Therefor, delay- and loss-sensitive real-time traffic needs special treatment when appli-cations communicate via ATM. Some issues are looked at inthis paper.IntroductionExisting communication networks will be replaced by integrated networks whichare able to handle various types of traffic and to satisfy the needs of a large num-ber of applications. Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) will be the transportmethod for the Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network (B-ISDN). It pro-vides support for the transmission of both asynchronous and synchronous real-time traffic.Expected real-time applications like video telephony, video conferences anddocument retrieval can either take advantage of human’s ability to cope with miss-ing pictures or bad audio quality, or of - time consuming, therefor inconvenient -retransmission.Things are different when we look at delay- and loss-sensitive real-time systems.They require guaranteed delivery with a given (maximum) transmission delay.Since one design aspect of ATM is, that delay and cell losses caused by conges-tion are shared amongst all existing connections (and therefor should be smallenough to be ignored by most of them), sensitive real-time traffic needs a trafficspecific transmission scheme.The goals for sensitive real-time traffic are obvious:1 . Fast transmission and guaranteed maximum transmission delay. This includes set-up and release time for a virtual connection.2. Guaranteed delivery. No cell loss caused by traffic congestion in the network.Losses due to transmission errors or physically broken connections are ignoredhere. The use of fibre optic cable reduces the bit-error rate to less than 1 0-9.
