By using micro-level longitudi-nal data from the German Socio-Economic Panel (SOEP), we apply a wide variety ofdiscrete choice static and dynamic panel models to analyse the decision to remit. Ourresults provide evidence in favour of an intertemporal strategy. The persistence inremittance decisions is significantly influenced by “true state dependence”: migrantsthat remitted in the previous year have a significantly higher propensity to remit thisyear as well. We also show that remittance time patterns depend on both observ-able and unobservable individual socioeconomic characteristics, and in particular, that the household’stransnational compositionplays an important role in determiningremittance behaviour. Keywords Migration · Remittances · Persistence · State dependence · Discretepanel data modelsJEL Classification F22 · F24 · C23 · C25Responsible editor: Klaus F.
