Wu*Received July 30, 1997; revised November 5, 1997The high-temperature sul®dation behavior of 310 stainless steel (310SS) withMo and Al additions (up to 10 at.%) was studied over the temperature range700±900 ° C in pure-sulfur vapor over the range of 10 -3to 10 -1atm. The cor-rosion kinetics followed the parabolic rate law in all cases and the sul®dationrates increased with increasing temperature and sulfur pressure. The sul®d-ation rates decreased with increasing Mo and Al contents and it was foundthat the addition of 10 at.% Mo resulted in the most pronounced reductionamong the alloys studied. The scales formed on 310SS with Mo additionswere complex, consisting of an outer layer of iron sul®de (with dissolved Cr),(Fe, Ni) 9 S 8 , and Cr 2 S 3 /Cr 3 S 4 (with dissolved Fe), and an inner heterophasiclayer of Fe 1 2 x S, Cr 2 S 3 /Cr 3 S 4 , NiCr 2 S 4 , Fe 1.25 Mo 6 S 7.7 , FeMo 2 S 4 , and MoS 2 .The scales formed on 310SS with Mo and Al additions had a similar mixtureas above, except that Al 0.55 Mo 2 S 4 was also observed in the inner layer. Theformation of MoS 2 and Al 0.55 Mo 2 S 4 partly blocked the transport of cationsthrough the inner scale, resulting in the reduction of the sul®dation rates com-pared to 310SS.KEY WORDS: sul®dation; 310SS, Mo; Al; Fe 1.25 Mo 6 S 7.7 ; FeMo 2 S 4 ; MoS 2 ; Al 0.55 Mo 2 S 4 .INTRODUCTIONStainless Steel (310SS) is one of the best heat-resistant structural steels usedin high-temperature oxidizing environments.
