Let^s Work And Have Fun Lucie Parrot, P.eng., M.eng.,CSl, CVS Associate, Nguyen Parrot Lucie Parrot is a professionai engineer witli over 20 years experience, 10 of those in value engineering. She has been moderating over 100 workshops in various fields such as manufacturing, service and construction industries, both for products and processes. Lately, she has been involved in the implementation of new product development processes, using fimction analysis as the prime tool for analyzing the needs and value engineering as the best practice to control cost and development lead time. She also teaches value engineering in two major Canadian universities with over 200 trainees that have participated in her training workshops and over 50 projects. She has also supervised the work of engineering students who choose to apply VE in their Master's thesis. ABSTRACT This paper shows the different roles of a VE moderator, starting with the basic selection criteria. A moderator has many roles before, during and after the workshop : prepare the mandate, organize the whole action, define strategy and tactics, train participants, go through the VE job plan and finally make sure everybody enjoys it at the same time! Some particular knowledge and skills are favored such as: be quick witted, organized and rigorous, dynamic, creative, flexible and open-minded... Good communication skills and self confidence are a must. Some sense of humor required! A golden rule of group leadership is presented. The role of the co-moderator is also discussed. DSfTRODUCTION VE workshops have traditionally been led by moderators. These individuals are typically people who have been through some VE studies beforehand and have discovered in themselves a taste for the leader's seat. Increasingly, though, one can see big companies naming or attracting some of their personnel in newly created VE positions. Such nominations should not be done blindly though, since the success of a VE workshop depends largely on the competency of its moderator (and of course of the participants). Applying basic selection criteria along with improving personal and professional skills will increase the probability ofhaving a great VE program with one success after another. People wall want to participate in VE workshops, because they are constructive, fim and rewarding for all. BASIC SELECTION CRITERIA First and foremost, a VE moderator does not have to be an expert in the field covered by the VE study. He needs to know something about it so he can have some credibility within the team. But ifhe is an expert in the subject, he will have a tendency to get involved in the content of the workshop and loose his focus on the methodology. So, in order to be able to moderate VE workshops, it is preferable to select moderators that are open-minded, a good communicator, humble, with the ability to synthesize and a good sense of humor and last but not least, knows all about VE. Flexibility and open-mindedness: in a competitive world such as today, it is of prime importance that each moderator is able to moderate workshops in various fields. For example, an engineer in one company may be asked to perform a workshop on HR processes or a consuhant in the manufacturing sector may need to moderate workshops of constmction projects.
