THE SATYRICON  by PETRONIUS http://www.sacred‐texts.com/cla/petro/satyr/sat02.htm    Translated by ALFRED R. ALLINSON  Chapters 26‐78: The Dinner at Trimalchio’s [Cena Trimalchionis]  For CC200 Classical World: The Roman Private World  This is an excerpt from the fragmentary work known as the Satyricon (or Satyrica) by Petronius. It probably belongs to the middle of the 1 st  century CE, during the principate of Nero (54‐68 CE), and it represents the earliest surviving example of the Roman novel. In short, the novel recounts a series of adventures involving two escaped slaves – Encolpius and Ascyltos – and their own slave boy and sexual plaything, Giton, as they wander about the area of the Bay of Neapolis (Naples)  and  get  into  various  scrapes.  There  are  numerous  sexually  explicit  scenes,  both heterosexual  and  homosexual,  and  the  scandalizing  nature  of  the  text  led  it  to  be  banned officially (but read privately) throughout the Renaissance and even through the 19 th  century. Today we would find these scenes relatively tame, of course, unless we examine them through the eyes of the maestro director‐auteur Frederico Fellini, who took the novel and distorted it into a riotous and outrageous film, Fellini Satyricon (1969).  As you read the text, consider these questions: ? how does this genre of literature differ from everything else you’ve read (epics, histories, tragedies, comedies, lyric poems, correspondence, autobiographies), and what makes it different? The title – Satyricon – is often read as suggestive as to the style of literature this represents – either satirical or akin to a Greek satyr play. Does this work seem satirical? does it have the kind of ribald, outrageous mocking behavior that a satyr play might have contained? ? what kind of world has Petronius created with these fictitious characters? ? should we expect these characters to reveal something about contemporary culture and, if so, how reliable a picture of Petronius’ world might they convey? ? what is  your impression  of Trimalchio?  if  you  were  to try  to reconstruct  1 st   century Roman society, to what segment of society would he belong? would you expect to run across this kind of household while strolling the streets of Pompeii? and, do you think the household of Trimalchio presents a typical or atypical Roman family? ? would you have enjoyed attending this dinner? if so, why? if not, why not?
