Microbial Growth on Pall Rings A Problem When Upgrading Biogas With the Water-WashAbsorption TechniqueÅSATYNELL,1GUNNAR BÖRJESSON,*,1AND MARGARETA PERSSON21Department of Water and Environmental Studies, Linköping University, SE-581 83 Linköping, Sweden, E-mail gunnar.borjesson@mikrob.slu.se; and 2Swedish Gas Centre, Scheelegatan 3, SE-212 28 Malmö, Sweden Received June 2, 2006; Revised September 1, 2006; Accepted September 30, 2006Abstract Biogas is upgraded using an absorption with water-wash technique by 11of a total of 14 upgrading plants in Sweden. However, problems with micro-bial growth on the pall rings in the absorption column, and in one case in thedesorption column, have a negative impact on the upgrading of raw gas tovehicle gas. Five of the nine biogas plants studied here have experiencedproblems with microbial growth. The objectives of this study were to identifysuch microbial growth and to determine possible factors for its control, inorder to provide recommendations for process management. A question-naire was sent out and visits were made to the upgrading plants to collectinformation about the upgrading process. Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA)analysis was performed to determine microbial biomass and communitystructure in samples from four upgrading plants. In samples from two of theplants, methane-oxidizing bacteria (type I methanotrophs) were indicated, while samples from one of the other plants showed biomarkers indicatingactinomycetes. Factors affecting development of microbial growth werefound to be water quality and the pH and temperature of the process water.Plants that used wastewater in the upgrading process experienced far moreproblems than those using clean water of drinking quality. Index Entries: Biogas upgrading; wastewater; actinomycetes; methano-trophs; phospholipid fatty acids.
