A guide to answer your first questions and calm your start-up jitters. I’ve Never Seen ADAMS® Before. What do I do? The best thing to do to familiarize yourself with modeling in ADAMS is to build a simple model in ADAMS/View. Start the software in UNIX by typing, for example, “/usr/bin/adams101”. The exact pathname will depend on where your software was installed, and what version of ADAMS you are running. ADAMS v10.1 usually starts up with the “adams101” command. When the ADAMS toolbar pops up, click on the gears icon (on the left) to start up ADAMS/View. On Windows NT, access ADAMS/View through Start Menu — Programs — ADAMS 10.1 — AView — AD-AMS View (or double click on the icon on your desktop). When prompted, choose “create a new model” and pick the set of units you are comfortable working with. Then, proceed directly to the Help menu, choose “ADAMS/View Guides”, and click on “Getting Started” — the last in the list of User’s Guides. Do the entire latch model, the step-by-step tutorial is great. It will require 1-2 hours. Once you’ve completed the latch model, feel free to explore on your own, or investigate the “ADAMS Labs” — point your browser to {adams_install_directory}/aview/examples/labs/index.htm and pick a classic mechanics prob-lem to investigate further. I’ve Opened the Box. Now What? Every copy of the ADAMS product line is shipped with a “Guide To Installing ADAMS on (UNIX or WindowsNT)” booklet. The first step is to install the software. Depending on the specifics of your computer and network situa-tion, you may be able to do this yourself, or assistance from an appropriate computer system administrator may be required. Some network savvy may be required, particularly if you are accessing your copy of the base ADAMS product from your engineering computer network while your ADAMS/Car license may be local. Administrator privi-lege is required. I’m Ready to try ADAMS/Car! Starting ADAMS/Car is similar to ADAMS/View. On the UNIX ADAMS toolbar, pick the car icon. In Windows NT, choose Start Menu — Programs — ADAMS 10.1 — ACar — ADAMS Car (view) (or double click on the icon on your desktop). As before, proceed directly to the Help menu, choose “ADAMS/Car Guides”, and click on “Getting Started” — the step-by-step suspension and full vehicle tuto-rial is great. Getting through both of these tutorials may take 4-5 hours. Pick a buddy (or two) and learn together. For the time being, do not do the flexible bodies tutorial or the template builder tutorial. You will be working from pre-made templates — either the ones which ship with ADAMS/Car or the ones which will be made available specifically for FSAE and Mini-Baja.
