Data consists of 60 paragraphslifted from the definition essays that were part of the students’portfolios. The paragraphs were analyzed using Lautamatti’stopical structure analysis (TSA), which examines the internaltopical structure by looking at the repetition of key words andphrases and provides insights into the internal coherence inparagraphs. It was found that parallel progression was mostfrequently used in the paragraphs, followed by extended andsequential progressions. The extended sequential progression wasleast used.Writing is a highly complex process for novice and non-novice writers alike since it involves a host of advanced skills thatinclude critical thinking, logical development, and coherence of ideas.Realizing coherence in written discourse is one major challengeconfronting writers, since it is not just a desirable character of atext but a crucial aspect that establishes the oneness of a collectionof abstract thoughts. Both novice and non-novice writers can onlyclaim a written text is successful if it is able to found a relationbetween the writer and reader, and between clauses, sentences,and paragraphs.Coherence is defined by Moore (1971) as “the rhetoricalquality by which all of the parts are clearly and smoothly joined toeach other” (p. 115). Good writing requires logically consistentideas in order for the writer to compose a coherent piece of discoursethat is readable and understandable to whoever the intended audiencemay be or whatever the writer’s purpose may be.
