This technology, the ITS Backbone that uses Self Describing Data (http://www.its.washington.edu/bbone/), creates a framework in which to build applications.These applications use Self Describing Data (SDD) to obtain real-time data over theInternet to perform functions ranging from ATMS to ATIS. Since the applications dependonly on knowledge of SDD, they are portable to any jurisdiction where SDD is employed asthe data transfer support. (SDD information and software are available for download fromthe ITS Backbone page noted above.) This paper describes the implementation of two suchportable applications.INTRODUCTIONAs part of the Seattle Smart Trek model deployment, two new applications where created toprovide real-time transit information. The two venues where transit riders need informationare (1) on the desktop and (2) at the transit center. The first project, Busview, is a desktopdisplay of the real-time location of all the transit vehicles operated by the regional transitcarrier, which operates one of the largest automatic vehicle location system (AVL) fleets ofvehicles in the United States. The second project is Transit Watch, which is a real-timearrival prediction system suitable for deployment in transit centers. Both of theseapplications are designed to operate over the Internet as Java applets. Both are designed tobe sufficiently general so that they can easily be ported to other cities. This paper describesthe two applets and the underlying information technology that makes them possible.
