    ABSTRACT niABSTRACTUsing statistical estimate to monitor regional economic development has proved a vital and difficult problem in the study of regional economy. The present dissertation is intended to probe in six chapters into this tough issue.The first chapter, the Introduction, will make a description with five case studies on the use and misuse of statistical estimate methods in the regional economic studies, in order to reveal the objective, significance and necessity of this dissertation, and also, the basic structure of the conducted research. In the author's opinion, how to maintain healthy regional economic development is not only a theoretical question of economics, but also a question of statistic estimate methods as well. For a correct and scientific estimate method is playing an extremely important role in evaluating and monitoring regional economic development. Besides, many statistic estimate methods have been used in the studies of regional economic development, but they are far from perfect or complete. The estimate methods being in use at present need to be constantly enriched and improved. Finally, the theory of regional economic development must be closely integrated with statistic estimate methods to obtain practical and further development.The second chapter, the Division of Economic Regions, will focus on the definition and characteristics of regions and economic regions, and the methods used to divide economic regions, applying both traditional statistical grouping method and modem cluster analysis method. The author believes that statistical grouping method is still useful and effective in dividing economic regions, but the modem cluster analysis method is more complete, visual and objective. Applying both methods in practice can not only make the two methods complement each other, but also obtain more scientific, objective, complete and accurate data on the regional economy.The third chapter, Estimate on Regional Economic Gaps, will introduce different statistical estimate methods applied in determining regional economic
