Many people are familiar with solar and wind energy, but tidal power is another promising option that often gets overlooked. The basic principle behind tidal power is quite simple: it harnesses the energy generated by the rise and fall of ocean tides, primarily driven by the gravitational pull of the moon and the sun. Now, there are two main types of tidal power generation currently being explored. The first is tidal barrages. Imagine a large dam built across a bay or estuary, similar to a hydroelectric dam but using tidal flow instead of river flow. During high tide, water flows into the reservoir behind the barrage. Then, as the tide turns and water begins to flow out, turbines, much like those in a hydro dam, are turned by the flowing water, generating electricity. The second type is tidal lagoons. These are essentially large man-made ponds built offshore. They work by capturing water during high tide and releasing it through underwater turbines during low tide. Both methods can produce significant amounts of electricity, but they have different environmental impacts and construction requirements. One of the major advantages of tidal power is its predictability. Unlike wind or solar, which can be intermittent depending on weather conditions, tides follow a fairly regular pattern that can be predicted months in advance.
