索书号: K152 /L129 (HF) History and memory after Auschwitz Contents Acknowledgments Introduction Chapter1 History and Memory: In the Shadow of the Holocaust Chapter2 Revisiting the Historians’ Debate: Mourning and Genocide Chapter3 Rereading Camus’s The Fall after Auschwitz and with Algeria Chapter4 Lanzmann’s Shoah: “Here There Is No Why” Chapter5 ’Twas the Night before Christmas: Art Spiegelman’s Maus Chapter6 Conclusion: Psychoanalysis, Memory, and the Ethical Turn Index Abstract This book focuses not so much on describing or even understanding the holocaust as on the appropriate ‘subject position’ of those born afterwards and still close enough to be haunted by the event. The author makes it clear not only how complex the act of receptions is in this case but also how easily it can go wrong, and what concepts may help us to avoid error. He focuses on the interactions among history, memory, and ethicopolitical concerns as they emerge in the aftermath of the Shoah. Particularly notable are his analyses of Albert Camus’s novella The Fall, Claude Lanzmann’s film Shoah, and Art Spiegelman’s “comic book” Maus. The author also considers the Historians’ Debate in the aftermath of German reunification and the role of psychoanalysis in historical understanding and critical theory.
