Laterin this chapter we will look at aseries of logical decisionsleading to the exact choice ofdevice to be used. First, let'sfamiliarize ourselves with someof the general features andrequirements which makedevices suitable for interlockingduties.StandardsThe European Standard EN1088 - “Interlocking devicesassociated with guards” givesguidance. It is intended to beused in conjunction with EN60947-5-1 for electromechanicalswitches and an equivalentstandard for magnetic andproximity type switches.ReliabilityAn interlock switch mustoperate reliably even underextreme conditions and roughtreatment. The operating mecha-nism should be kept as simple aspossible and all materials used inits manufacturer should be of thehighest quality. The design shouldensure that component wear iskept to a minimum. The mecha-nism should be enclosed in astrong, sealed case.SecurityThe security of an interlockswitch is dependent on its abilityto withstand attempts to “cheat”or defeat the mechanism. Aninterlock switch should bedesigned so that it cannot beeasily defeated.In some circumstances, person-nel may be tempted to overridethe switch in some way. Informa-tion concerning the use of themachine, gathered at the riskassessment stage, will help todecide whether this is more likelyor less likely to happen. The morelikely it is to happen, then themore difficult it should be tooverride the switch or system. Thelevel of estimated risk should alsobe a factor at this stage. Switchesare available with various levelsof security ranging from resis-tance to impulsive tampering, tobeing virtually impossible todefeat.It should be noted at this stage,that if a high degree of security isrequired, it is sometimes morepractical to achieve this by theway in which the switch ismounted.For example, if the switch ismounted as in fig. 44 with acovering track, there is no accessto the switch with the guard dooropen. The nature of any “cheat-ing” prevention measures taken atthe installation stage will dependon the operating principle of theswitch.Interlocking Principles and DevicesFig. 44
