Any questions regarding the syllabus should be directed to the instructor immediately. The instructor assumes the student will commit a reasonable amount time and energy in order to succeed in this course. This means that students are responsible for their success in this course. Please don't be intimidated by the length of this syllabus. It was written for your benefit. Description: Physics 4A is the first in a sequence of three introductory general physics courses for physics and engineering majors. This course focuses on the fundamentals of mechanics. The topical content of this course is, typically: kinematics, Newton's laws, energy and momentum conservation, rotational kinematics and dynamics, gravitation, and fluids. It is important that the student has a very good command of algebra, trigonometry, differential calculus, and the basics of integral calculus. Rationale: The purpose of this course is to help students understand important aspects of the physical world. By "understand" two things are implied: 1. When perceiving a phenomenon, understanding is achieved when the student is able to say, "I see how this works." In other words, the student should be able to identify causes, in order to relate them to each other and to their inevitable consequences (effects). 2. The second meaning, which is much more pragmatic, is that the student must be able to solve problems. This involves translating words into equations and then manipulating them mathematically. Note: To demonstrate an understanding of physics concepts does not imply that the student can “regurgitate” the instructor’s lectures on an exam. It implies that the student
