IntroductionThe electronic or mechanical hysteresis loop is an interesting phenomenon which has been widely reported in ferro-magnetic materials [6,10], and recently also observed in smart materials, such as piezo-ceramics and shape memoryalloys [1]. Based on this special feature, various applications such as hysteresis motor and shape memory products havebeen suggested.System with the hysteresis phenomenon usually exhibits oscillations with rich dynamics due to its non-differentiableand memory characteristics. Therefore, in addition to physical and material sciences, active research on applying thehysteresis nonlinearity as a major element for chaos generation has been witnessed [2,7–9,12,13,15,17,18].The hysteresis function with a piecewise linear circuit model is well known [3,5]. Therefore, it serves as a potentialreplacement for the piecewise functions, which are commonly used in many chaotic circuits, in particular Chua’s circuit[4] and its n-scroll variants [19–23]. In this paper, we adopt the RCL network structure found in Chua’s circuit, andexplain the use of voltage-controlled devices with a multiple hysteresis feature for the generation of n · m-scroll attrac-tors. Although the works on generating and analyzing n · m-scroll attractors have been widely reported recently, with acomprehensive review given in [14], its formation in a single RCL network has never been reported and remained as atechnical challenge.The contributions of the paper are two-fold. Firstly, it demonstrates the use of the hysteresis circuit to replace thepiecewise linear function in Chua’s circuit. Secondly, or more importantly, by considering the RCL network as a two-port network, the generation of n · m-scroll attractors using hysteresis dynamics is verified.
