Primogeniture, Monogamy and Reproductive Successin a Stratif i ed SocietybyTheodore C. BergstromUniversity of MichiganCurrent version: October 3, 1994Abstract. This paper explores the workings of stratif i ed societies in which there is primogenitureand where the nobility practice monogamous marriage with a double standard of sexual f i delity. The paper models a simple stratif i ed society and def i nes the reproductive values of male and femalenobility relative to that of commoners. It goes on to explore implications of the hypothesis thatpreferences have evolved to favor maximization of reproductive value. This hypothesis is testedagainst fragmentary data from ancient civilizations and quite detailed information about the Britisharistocracy in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This work has been strongly inf l uencedby theoretical discussions and empirical evidence found in the writings of an anthropologist, LauraBetzig, and an historian Lawrence Stone.
