Pavlov, 2010, published in Khimicheskaya Tekhnologiya, 2010, Vol. 11, No. 1, pp. 9–14.487During the production of isoprene from isobutene andformaldehyde, raw hydrocarbon materials are usuallyused in the form of either isobutene–isobutene fractionsobtained by the dehydrogenation of isobutane or butane–isobutane– n ?butene fractions obtained after 1,3?butadi?ene is recovered from the C 4 fraction of the pyrolysis prod?ucts. These fractions are usually denoted as BIF and con?tain 40–45% isobutene. Formaldehyde is fed as an aque?ous solution containing 36–40% of methanol?freeformaldehyde. The process is conducted in two steps. In step I, iso?prene precursors (IPs) form in the presence of a ratherstrong acid at 80 − 110 ° C.4,4?Dimethyl?1,3?dioxane (DMD) is formed accord?ing to the following reaction:(1)and 3?methylbutane?1,3?diol (MBD), according tothe following reaction:(2)along with C 5 isopentenols: 3?methyl?3?butene?1?ol, 3?methyl?2?butene?1?ol, and 3?methyl?1?butene?3?ol.CH 2 CCH 3CH 3 + 2CH 2 OCH 3CCH 3CH 2 CH 2CH 2 OO,CH 2 CCH 3CH 3 + CH 2 O + H 2 OCH 3 COHCH 3CH 2 CH 2 OH ,Usually the forming IP contain 77–80% of DMD,17–20% of MBD, and 3–5% of isopentenols. Simulta?neously, isobutene hydration occurs to yield tert ?butanol(TB):(3)In step II, the IPs are capable of a transformation intoisoprene according to reactions (4), (5), and (6):(4)(5)(6)TB undergoes dehydration and forms isobutene.In the currently implemented process [1, 3], at stage Ithe isobutene?containing C 4 fraction is brought intodirect contact with formaldehyde and an acidic catalyticsolution in the IP synthesis module. PavlovYaroslavl Research Center of Chemical Technology, Yaroslavl, Russiae?mail: olefin@mail.ruReceived September 24, 2008Abstract —The industrially implemented process of isoprene production from isobutene?containing C 4 frac?tions and formaldehyde, which includes the gas?phase high?temperature decomposition of an intermediate,4,4?dimethyl?1,3?dioxane, is expensive and obsolete. We propose a new technology that requires the sameprecursors and allows for a reduction in the cost of isoprene by a factor of at least 1.5.
