ADAPTIVELY FOCUSING EXTRA-OCULAR VISION PROSTHESESFIELDOF INVENTIONThis invention relates to vision prostheses, and in particular, to extra-ocular visionprostheses.5 BACKGROUNDInthe course of daily life, one typically regards objects located at differentdistances fromthe eye. To selectively focus on such objects, the focal lengthofthe eye’slens must change. Ina healthy eye, this is achieved throughthe contraction ofa ciliarymuscle that is mechanically coupledtothe lens. To the extent thatthe ciliary muscle1o contracts, it deformsthe lens, thereby changing its focal length. By selectively deformingthe lens in this manner, it becomes possible to focus on objects that are at differentdistances fromthe eye. This process of selectively focusingon objects at differentdistances is referred to as “accommodation.”Asa person ages, the lens loses plasticity. As a result, it becomes increasingly15 difficult to deformthe lens sufficiently to focus on objects at different distances. Tocompensate for this loss of function, it is necessary to provide different opticalcorrections for focusing on objects at different distances. One approachto applying different optical corrections is to carry different pairs ofglasses and to swap glasses as the need arises. For example, one might carry reading2o glasses for reading anda separatepairof distance glasses for driving. This isinconvenient both becauseofthe needto carry more thanone pair of glasses and becauseofthe needto swap glasses frequently.Bifocal lenses assist accommodationby integrating two different opticalcorrections ontothe same lens. The lower partof the lens is groundto providea25 correction suitable for readingor other close-up worlc whilethe remainderofthe lens isgroundto providea correction for distance vision. To regard ano bject,a wearerofabifocal lens need only maneuverthe headso that rays extendingb etweenthe object-of-regard and the pupil passt hrough that portion ofthe bifocallenshavingan optical
