Vulnerable Boys: Short-term and Long-term GenderDif f erences in the Impacts of Adolescent DisadvantageZiteng Lei Shelly Lundberg ∗University of California, Santa BarbaraMay 1, 2020AbstractThe growing gender gap in educational attainment between men and womenhas raised concerns that the skill development of boys may be more sensitive tofamily disadvantage than that of girls. Using the National Longitudinal Study ofAdolescent to Adult Health (Add Health) data we f i nd, as do previous studies, thatboys are more likely to experience increased problems in school relative to girls, including suspensions and reduced educational aspirations, when they are in poorquality schools, less-educated neighborhoods, and father-absent households. Follow-ing these cohorts into young adulthood, however, we f i nd no evidence that adolescentdisadvantage has stronger negative impacts on long-run economic outcomes such ascollege graduation, employment, or income for men, relative to women. We do f i ndthat father absence is more strongly associated with men’s marriage and childbear-ing and weak support for greater male vulnerability to disadvantage in rates of highschool graduation. An investigation of adult outcomes for another recent cohortfrom the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, 1997 produces a similar pattern ofresults. We conclude that focusing on gender dif f erences in behavior in school maynot lead to valid inferences about the ef f ects of disadvantage on adult skills. Keywords: Gender, education, employment, earnings, family structure, father absence, schoolquality, neighborhood ef f ectJEL Classif i cation: J24, J12, J16∗ Ziteng Lei is a PhD student at the University of California, Santa Barbara and can be reachedat ziteng lei@umail.ucsb.edu.
