These comprise behavioural interventions and tactics that people adopt to foresee and mitigate threats such as error, and maintain performance. In order to validate conceptual frameworks resulting from analysis of these resilience strategies, and as a development of a previously undertaken traditional diary study, we have developed the RSDiary app for collecting such strategies. In this poster- demo, we introduce the notion of cognitive resilience strategies, present the RSDiary app, outline the process that led to its inception, and discuss the potential contributions of the tool itself, and of the data resulting from it. INTRODUCTION Cognitive resilience strategies, as outlined by Furniss, Back & Blandford [1], comprise a set of behavioural phenomena that individuals deploy to mitigate risks or improve performance, both in terms of interactions with technical and sociotechnical systems and in wider every day life. Examples include creating cues to support prospective memory, ensuring the availability of resources, and micro-managing or restructuring workload. While many of these strategies occur in a ‘physical’ sense (e.g., leaving an umbrella hanging on the handle of a front door to ensure it is not forgotten), users of interactive systems can also be observed forming and utilising such strategies (e.g. appropriating onscreen artifacts, building spare capacity into databases and spreadsheets, or using a mobile phone camera as an improvised data capture device for collecting text). Additionally, such strategies are observed across many situations ranging from the mundane and everyday, to safety-critical cases such as hospital wards and cockpits. While a move towards ‘resilience thinking’ is reflected in the establishment of resilience engineering, such work largely seeks to assess and implement resilience in institutions, processes, and wider sociotechnical systems. It is only relatively recently that researchers in the field of HCI have begun to specifically target and understand the resilience strategies of individuals. To date, existing work (e.g. [1, 2]) has articulated and defined cognitive resilience strategies, collected examples, and begun to form empirically grounded conceptual frameworks to assist in their analysis. In order to validate and refine this work, however, a more extensive pool of real world examples of resilience strategies is required. THE RESILIENCE DIARY CONCEPT Furniss, Back & Blandford [1] presented a data-driven 7-item scheme to classify resilience strategies. In order to collect a number of accounts of resilience strategies for the formation of this scheme, Furniss et al. initially presented the concept of RSDiary, or a resilience strategies diary. Furniss et al. appropriated twitter as a means to collect strategies across a range of contexts and from a number of different contributors, with entries being labeled with the #RSDiary hashtag. This enabled the authors to easily filter out RSDiary entries and collect a set of examples from which they derived their scheme. While the resilience diary concept yielded valuable and insightful data, the authors recognised a number of limitations in their work. In addition to the quantity of entries (n=49) and contributors (n=5), the authors conceded that the 140-character limit imposed by twitter restricted the amount of detail that contributors could record. Subsequent work to assess, validate and refine the scheme in collaboration with the original authors led to the need to collect further examples of resilience strategies. To this end, we ran a traditional paper-based diary which served to replicate the purpose of the twitter RSDiary method, however allowing for more detailed entries [3].
