The Philosophy of Opposites A. Sliding and Climbing Generally speaking, a person’s life consists of two opposite movements: sliding and climbing. At first blush sliding seems much easier than climbing, yet the fact often turns out to the contrary. Those who often slide easily become exhausted and listless. As a result, they usually withdraw prematurely from the stage of the world. It is hard to image for one to keep sliding all the way to such a senile age as 80. However, it is possible for one to climb on and on until one is 90, still looking sound and hale. B. The Beggar and the Rich Man A man saw me put money into the bowl of a beggar, came up and warned me with the best of intentions: “Beware of beggars in Taipei, ninety-nine percent of them are cheats. They will spend your money on wine and fancy women.” “Beggars can’t be cheats,” I answered . “As soon as a man holds out his hand for money, he has spiritually identified himself with a beggar. An able-bodied or even a wealthy man who voluntarily identifies himself with the beggar is actually a beggar and thus all the more deserves pity and charity.”
