Mr. Vetro: A Collective Simulation for teaching healthscienceAndri Ioannidou & Alexander Repenning & David Webb &Diane Keyser & Lisa Luhn & Christof DaetwylerReceived: 19 October 2007 /Accepted: 3 March 2010 /Published online: 30 March 2010# International Society of the Learning Sciences, Inc.; Springer Science+Business Media, LLC 2010Abstract Why has technology become prevalent in science education without fundamen-tally improving test scores or student attitudes? We claim that the core of the problem ishow technology is being used. Technologies such as simulations are currently not used totheir full potential. For instance, physiology simulations often follow textbooks bysequentially exposing individual systems such as the circulatory and respiratory systemsone at a time, leaving out essential comprehension of system interactions. Moreover, thestandard computer lab hides students behind large monitors and ignores the social aspect oflearning. We have created a new kind of infrastructure, called Collective Simulations toprovide engaging inquiry-based science learning modules that uniquely combine sociallearning pedagogies with distributed simulation technology. This infrastructure createsimmersive learning experiences based on wirelessly connected computers and enablesradically different classroom learning experiences that engage students and teacherssimultaneously. Collective Simulations allow students to learn about the intricacies ofComputer-Supported Collaborative Learning (2010) 5:141–166DOI 10.1007/s11412-010-9082-8A. Ioannidou (*) : A.
