How to Grow Anything: Your Best Garden and Landscape in 6 Lessons (List of Plants Featured)Plants are grouped by lesson and listed by the common name we used, followed by their botanical name. Common names can vary greatly, so use the botanical name when searching the internet or garden books for more informat i on on the individual plants. TYPES OF PLANTSPlants dif f er by life cycle: ?? Annuals complete their lifecycle then die naturally within one year. But cold winters and hot summers can shorten the lifespan of otherwise longer-lived plants, so for many gardeners these are annuals, too, unless moved indoors during winter to extend their lives or kept year-round as houseplants. ?? Biennials complete their life cycle in two years. During the fi rst year these plants only produce leaves and the second year they produce leaves, fl owers, seeds then die. These are of t en forced into bloom the fi rst year and grown as annuals. ?? Perennials have the potent i al to live for mult i ple years when condit i ons are favorable. Many die back and go dormant at some point during the year.Plants can also be grouped by how they grow or their use in the landscape. For example,?? Shrubs: perennial plants forming woody stems that branch near the ground ?? Trees: also woody perennials but typically have one main stem, known as a trunk, and grow taller than shrubs; can vary from narrow and upright to wide-spreading, mult i -stemmed, and weeping ?? Bulbs: here refers to perennial plants with notable swollen underground food storage organs; includes true bulbs, corms, rhizomes, tubers, and tuberous roots; bulbs that are non-hardy or tender in your area must be treated like annuals or overwintered indoors ?? Vines: climbing and trailing plants, annual or perennial, with woody stems that typically need support to grow upright ?? Groundcovers: low-growing plants, annual or perennial, that tend to spread quickly to cover the soil surfaceHARDINESS ZONESCold hardiness zones are based on average minimum cold temperatures. 2012 United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) zones go from 1a to 13b:?? coldest: zone 1a, –60 to –55 degrees F, or –51.1 to –48.3 degrees C?? warmest: zone 13b, 65 to 70 degrees F, or 18.3 to 21.1 degrees C Most countries use a similar zone rat i ng or provide a conversion from theirs to the USDA zones. See Lesson 2 or the internet for maps. Hardiness zone rat i ngs are given for biennial and perennial plants.LESSON 1?? ageratum, fl ossf l ower; Ageratum houstonianum; annual?? aster; Symphyotrichum Syn.
