Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of the resis-tance of colored leather to bleeding. This test method does notapply to wet blue.1.2 This test method is intended for use on f i nished upperleather for shoes or similar end use, or the leather article suchas shoe, handbag, etc.1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regardedas standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to SI units that are provided for information onlyand are not considered standard.1.4 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns, if any, associated with its use. Terminology3.1 Def i nitions of Terms Specif i c to This Standard:3.1.1 bleeding—the transfer of color from a f i nished leathersample onto or into another medium.4. Signif i cance and Use4.1 Bleed resistance is considered to be an important char-acteristic in leather used to make lined and unlined items thatmay come in contact with water.5. Apparatus5.1 Air-Tight Oven.5.2 Bleached Cotton Sheeting, 3 2 in. squares (51.6 by 51.6mm).5.3 Glass Plates, two 6 in. squares (152.4 by 152.4 mm) and0.125 in. (3.18 mm) thick.6. Test Specimen6.1 The test specimen shall be a 4 in. square (101.6 by 101.6mm) of f i nished leather.7. Procedure7.1 Place the unf i nished side of the leather specimen on thecenter of one of the glass plates. Thoroughly soak the foursquares of cotton sheeting in distilled water for 5 min. Stackthem on top of each other on the other glass plate. Invert thisplate with the cotton cloths, and place on top of the other plateholding the leather specimen. The cloths should line upapproximately in the center of the leather specimen.7.2 The cloth in immediate contact with the leather ismarked Number 1, the next cloth Number 2, the next Number3 and the top cloth Number 4. Place this entire sandwich in anoven at 120°F (49°C) for 12 to 16 h. Remove the glass platesand observe the individual cloths for discoloration.8. Report8.1 Migration of Bleeding—Observe each of the four clothsfor coloration and report migration as 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4. Thenumbers indicate the cotton cloth that discoloration hasreached by migration.8.2 Hue—Note the predominant hue of the colors that bledon each cloth.8.3 Intensity—Observe each cloth Number 1 for this pur-pose.
