Symposium no. 19Paper no. 181Presentation: poster181-1Potentials to external environmental affects of soilsBIELEK PavolSoil Science and Conservation Research Institute, Gagarinova 10,827 13 Bratislava,Slovak RepublicAbstractFrom experimental data and with help of relevant methods of data assessment, thefollowing conclusions can be summarized. From 30 to 50 kg nitrate nitrogen is produced in non-N-fertilized soil during thegrowing season on average. When N fertilizers were applied this is from 50 to 90 kg N-NO3-. About 111 thousand t of N-NO3- is produced yearly in all the agricultural soils(non-N-fertilized) of Slovakia. Each 1 kg applied nitrogen ha-1 (total is 2.5 million ha)brings about 1.8 thousand t of N-NO3- more in all the territory of Slovakia. This is aserious potential for environmental hazard.About 10,061 thousand t of C-CO2 can be emitted on average from soil cover(agricultural soils) of Slovakia during the growing season (it is about 4.2 t C-CO2 ha-1).Total C-CO2 emissions by Slovakian industry is about 12 500 thousand t. It means thatit is very close amount to the natural CO2 production by soils. Influences of fertilizerswere not defined clearly.About 4.3 thousand t of N-N2O is emitted yearly now from the total area ofSlovakian agricultural soils. From traffic and industry, it is not more than 4.06 thousandtons yearly. All concerns can be serious potentials for external ecological impacts of soil coveron the environment. Keywords: nitrification, CO2 emissions from soil, N2O emissions from soilIntroductionSoil is an integrated part of nature. It means that soil body is not only receptor butalso a donor of its own products and original materials into the other natural resources(mainly air and water). This is a very essential ecological and environmental phenomenon, which haspositive and/or negative affects mainly on air and water resources. Moreover this has animportant role of soil in circulation of biogenic and non-biogenic elements in the nature.Of course this transport is environmentally sound only in case when quantity andquality of productions and transports are not over the global environmental equilibrium.Nitrogen and carbon is transformed a lot and emitted/transported from soil into theother sources in nature. Nitrate produced in soil can be moved into the water resources;Nitrous oxide (and other nitrogen gases) can be produced and emitted from soil into theair; CO2 produced after the soil organic matter mineralization can be released into theair as well. All mentioned substances could affect the water, air and finallycomprehensive environment quality too (greenhouse effect, drinking waters pollution,etc.).
