In the 1990's research on strengthtraining for older adults exploded. Before that, health experts merelyencouraged older adults to doaerobic training to prevent or treatcardiovascular disease. However, peoplehave started living longer and it isimportant to help them stay asindependent as possible in all areas oftheir lives. Thus, experts now recommend thatolder adults also do strength training tomaintain their strength, muscle mass andbalance. Why is it important for olderadults to do strength training? As people age, they can lose a greatdeal of strength and muscle mass (seeFigure 1). This can affect their day to dayfunctioning. When people reach their 70’sor even earlier, they may not be able to:• Lift groceries• Climb stairs• Do heavy housework or gardening• Cross the street quickly enough tokeep up with the traffic lights• Pick up their grandchildrenWhat's more, older adults who arelosing muscle mass and are inactive havean increased risk of disability, falls anddiseases such as diabetes. Figure 1. The MRI (magneticresonance image) on the top is fromthe lower leg of a younger woman. The one on the bottom is from anolder woman. The older woman haslost muscle (dark areas), gained bodyfat (white areas) and also has more fatand connective tissue (white areas)inside the muscle. What does the research say aboutstrength training?Age does not seem to limit people'sability to get stronger when they dostrength training.
