Al-Marzooq Electrical Engineering Department, College of Engineering, King Saud University, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia This paper implements a contingency selection algorithm to rank different contin-gencies. The algorithm uses the change in a performance index as a measure to rank different single line outage contingencies. The shortcomings of the algorithm have been highlighted. The main one is the masking p h e n o m e n o n wherein a contingency which leaves a n u m b e r of lines heavily loaded is ranked equally with one which produces single overload. It has been shown, that this masking can be greatly reduced by appropriate selection of the various parameters in the perform-ance index equation combined with experience of the system network configuration and operation. T h e overloads resulting from the high ranked contingencies have been alleviated by a passive corrective approach. This is based mainly u p o n calculating a small percentage of the line distribution factors. A newly developing power system of the central region of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been used to implement and demonstrate the effectiveness of both the ranking algorithm as well as the passive corrective measure. Introduction One of the most important factors in the operation of a power system is the desire to maintain system security. System security involves practices designed to keep the system operating when components fail. Also, if a transmission line is damaged and taken out by relaying, the remaining transmission lines can take the increased loading. Many possible outage conditions could happen to a power system. Thus, there is a need to have a mean to study a large number of them, so that operation personnel can be warned ahead of time if one or more outages will cause serious overload on other equipments.
