Designation: D1933 − 03 (Reapproved 2017)Standard Specif i cation forNitrogen Gas as an Electrical Insulating Material 1This standard is issued under the f i xed designation D1933; the number immediately following the designation indicates the year oforiginal adoption or, in the case of revision, the year of last revision. A number in parentheses indicates the year of last reapproval. Asuperscript epsilon (´) indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1. Scope1.1 This specif i cation covers three types of nitrogen used asan electrical insulating material in electrical equipment:1.1.1 Type I, obtained from the air by liquefaction processesand dried,1.1.2 Type II, obtained from the air by liquefactionprocesses, deoxidized with hydrogen over a platinum catalyst, and dried, and1.1.3 Type III, obtained from the air by liquefaction pro-cesses and if necessary deoxidized by suitable means.N OTE 1—The fact that metal containers are f i lled with materialsmeeting this specif i cation does not exclude the possibility that thematerials might become contaminated with unlisted impurities.1.2 The following safety hazards caveat pertains only to thetest method portion, Section 5, of this specif i cation: Thisstandard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns,if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the userof this standard to establish appropriate safety and healthpractices and determine the applicability of regulatory limita-tions prior to use.2. Referenced Documents2.1 ASTM Standards: 2D2029 Test Methods for Water Vapor Content of ElectricalInsulating Gases by Measurement of Dew PointE105 Practice for Probability Sampling of MaterialsE260 Practice for Packed Column Gas Chromatography3. Composition and Properties3.1 Samples extracted from nitrogen containers shall con-form to the requirements prescribed in Table 1.4. Sampling4.1 Nitrogen Shipped as a Gas in High-Pressure MetalContainers—Extract test specimens from the container orcontainers, preferably by means of a dual-stage high-pressuregas regulator, capable of reducing inlet gas pressures of 15MPa (2200 psi) to a constant low discharge pressure. Screw thepressure regulator inlet connection on to the container valveoutlet. Connect the regulator outlet connection to the gassampling pipe or to the gas analyzing equipment by means ofmetal or glass tubing, except that rubber tubing may be used tosecure butt joints in metal-to-glass or glass-to-glass tubing.Take care to ensure that all tubing is clean and dry and thesampling apparatus is thoroughly purged of atmospheric gasesbefore the test specimen is taken. Where a multiplicity ofcylinders are to be sampled, follow Practice E105 if it isconsidered satisfactory to sample less than the total number ofcontainers.4.2 Nitrogen Shipped as a Liquid in Metal Containers andUsed as a Gas—Use the same sampling procedure as that fornitrogen shipped as a gas in high-pressure metal containerswith the following exception: Extract gas samples from thecontainer or containers preferably by means of a single-stagegas regulator capable of reducing inlet gas pressures of 1.7MPa (250 psi) to a constant low discharge pressure.5. Test Methods5.1 Determine the properties enumerated in this specif i ca-tion in accordance with the following methods:5.1.1 Nitrogen and Rare Gases—Calculate by differenceafter oxygen and hydrogen values are known.5.1.2 Hydrogen—Practice E260. Determine the hydrogencontent by methods mutually agreed upon between the pur-chaser and the supplier or by Practice E260.5.1.3 Oxygen—Practice E260 or by methods mutuallyagreed upon between the purchaser and the supplier.5.1.4 Dew Point—Test Methods D2029.6. Shipping6.1 Package nitrogen in metal containers that comply withthe requirements of, and are approved by the Department ofTransportation. Ensure the inside of the cylinder is dry and freefrom oil and corrosive chemicals.7. Keywords7.1 electrical insulating material; nitrogen gas; oxygen gas1 This specif i cation is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D27 onElectrical Insulating Liquids and Gases and is the direct responsibility of Subcom-mittee D27.02 on Gases and Non-Mineral Oil Liquids.Current edition approved Jan. 1, 2017.
