Well, it's autumn already and the olives are looking good, but the
grapes are looking better! Last Sunday we all gathered in Vatoudiaris
for crushing and, as always, a huge and delicious feats afterwards for
crushers and arm-chair assistants as well!

Unusual weather! So far we have had a strange autumn with two
periods of heavy rain in mid-October and early November. It was
tough for folks on the coast but inland it has been great for our olives
and oranges and brought snow on the mountains which always
bodes well!
And more unusual weather! The winter this year has been very
mild (to date anyway ... perhaps writing this will bode ill??) but
it's been great for the oranges and we do have snow on the
mountains.
And yet more unusual weather! Our summer has been unusually warm with temperatures in the mid-30s for a few weeks. We have read it is
quite the opposite in the UK and northern Europe and we hope none of you have been affected by this spate of bad weather.
outside of village limits ... possibly from as early as 2008. We have privately advised our clients and want to alert all readers that this law is a
distinct possibility. If you own a plot outside of the village limits, please obtain building permission immediately. We understand that existing
building permissions will be grandfathered in under the new law. Personally we are in favour of such a change to help keep Crete green and
prevent it from becoming like the south coast of Spain. We will update this page as soon as we have any news.
The summer of fire! We are grieving for all those who lost family, friends, and homes in the terrible fires in Greece this summer. Fortunately
Crete was for the most part spared, perhaps because of our geographical situation and vegetation patterns. We hope this was a one-off
occasion ... we remember well the winters of 2003 and 2004 when we had so much rain and even snow here in Crete, albeit just for one day.
We take no sides in the climate change debate but our lifestyle here is certainly conservative and we trust we are not contributing to change. It
seems nowhere in the world is free from potential natural disasters, and we believe that nowhere in the world is there a better place to live than
Crete.
Kalives ... a bright and warm sunny day and much fun! Easter comes late this
year ... 27 April. Happy Easter to the rest of Europe on the 23rd of March!
More on proposed land zoning ... but not much more! This from the newspapers on 16 May 2008:

Public Works and Environment Minister Giorgos Souflias said yesterday that he would this summer be announcing changes to the law on town
planning, which will affect the criteria for issuing building permits and is aimed at speeding up the process for areas to be incorporated in town
plans.

«As far as construction that is not included in town plans is concerned, we have decided not to ban it completely but to severely limit it with
specific measures,» he said.

He also called on opposition MPs yesterday to submit their suggestions on the changes that should be made to the land-zoning plan he has
tabled in Parliament.

It was the second day of debate on the zoning bill and Souflias, speaking to a largely empty house, said he expected specific proposals from the
opposition parties, which have criticized the draft law.

«In Greece, we talk about protecting the environment when the basic tools to achieve this, such as a zoning plan, a forest register and a land
register, are missing,» he said. «In Greece, we are hypocrites.»
No news is good news! It has been a quiet summer with tourism well down but that just gave us more time at the beach and more time to
spend with our friends and families. The autumn has been mild with adequate rains so the olive harvest will be bountiful this year. The
harvesting process has begun (end of November) and will last through January. We wish you all much joy and happiness and look forward to
meeting new friends and renewing old acquaintances next year.
Property prices in Crete are at last going down. We have been explaining to sellers that they must reduce prices and many have indeed. There
are some excellent bargains out here! And more recently, and very regrettably, some non-resident owners are being forced by the economic
downturn to sell their homes. We certainly regret that such drastic measures are necessary but on the other side, it has created some very fine
opportunities for those with sufficient funds. It is a definitely buyer's market here these days.
been too quiet! Well, prices continue to drop and Crete remains (we think) one of the best places in the world to live so we hope that next year
will bring more activity and more friends! We wish you all a pleasant winter. In between harvesting olives and gathering oranges and holiday
cooking and baking, we will be "working" from home as usual.
Despite all the headlines about Greece's economic plight, the sun is shining, the beaches are clean and warm, the food and wine are better than
ever, and the people are smiling! Property prices are indeed dropping and there has never been a better opportunity to find your home on our
island paradise, or just to drop in for a chat and a coffee or fresh orange juice. We look forward to welcoming you!
